So Well Soon
  Of men and basements
Ursula's basement. Lets see. At the very least there won't be anything in it. Ok maybe a treasure chest. With a note. A note saying something about plans coming together. No that's too obvious. Ok how about this: instead of rats there's a just a rat, a big one. And the player gets to have a convesation with it.

Yah: mactell sends the character on the quest assuming he'll just kill the rat without thinking but Hinchman will stop and initiate the covnversation.

Ok lets make this overly complicated and convoluted. The rat is some random minion of the antagonist. The atagonist I haven't got to yet. Ok the councel is the antagonist. And the minion needed to be taken care of by someone who could remain ignorant to the plans. So Mactell assigns the player the job of killing the rats assuming he'll just kill it without thinking. But Hinchman stops him. Good thing for the conveniently placed and obtained Hinchman. I'm sure Hinchman will note of this when it happens.

Alright does the minion/rat have a name? Maybe he's just a nameless, anonymous minion. Seems an experiment went wrong and rat-boy here got turned into a rat. or should he be Hinchman? Or sure that'd change the whole story, wouldn't it? No that's a bad idea. Conversation with a rat, now that's gold.

So what does that rat say? Lets say he talks about some various experiments in ancient magic that have gone wrong. They've all been performed in secret and managed to keep it secret. Then he, rat-boy, managed to escape. The rat says Mactell probably didn't know he was assigning the player to take out the last bit of evidence but then probably didn't really question why such a quest would need assigning by a councel member either. The rat says he'd like to stay in that form to gather more information hidden from view.

This, oddly enough, Hinchman doesn't much like and is very suspucious. But the rat is allowed to leave.

Now our two main characters, the player and Hinchman, will go upstairs into Ursula's House. Ursula won't be there though. In fact there will be no Ursula, I'll just refer to her a lot. The same way this is loosely based on a story by an author named Ursula, but there's too many differences. It's like symbolism, or something.

A search of Ursula's house will yield no further clues. And mysteriously the door back out into the city will open without issue, no apparent blockage of any kind. Hinchman will have some sarcastic remark about that. The only thing left is to report back to Mactell with the events thus far.

Question is how much information can even be attempted to be given or explained to Mactell before some sort of interruption.
